This course deals with
foundational topics in linguistic research, including the
identification and classification of speech sounds, the features
of connected speech, and impressionistic and instrumental
analysis. Emphasis is given to the use of computational techniques
in performing phonetic analysis. Students will be given hands-on
experience using the Kay Computer Speech Laboratory and other
speech analysis programs. Different theories about the relationship
between sound and meaning are also discussed in this course.
