This course focuses
on articulatory phonetics; the speech mechanism; the description
and classification of sounds of languages; sounds in context;
prosodic features; tone and intonation; and practical work.

| Course objectives: |
* Essential concepts in the subfield of phonetics;
* Describing sounds in human languages;
* Understanding & use of IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) in trascribing English & other languages of China;
* Awareness of the wide range of sounds used in human languages;
* Tone systems and suprasegmentals.
