Hong Kong Dialects

Dr Cathryn Donohue has been working with local communities in her Fieldtrip courses. The degree of language loss in these communities was very surprising and the work coming out of these courses includes investigations into the causes for language change as well as documentation, and quantitative approaches to linguistic studies. She recently gave a TEDx talk about HK’s linguistic landscape and will be participating in the WAY Project’s “Living on the Water” event with students from the Fieldtrip course, discussing aspects of the Fisherfolk speech. She is currently involved in making a short video on “Hong Kong’s disappearing dialects” and will be launching a website on these local dialect communities and their languages in June 2016:
