The Red Dragonfly Chinese Word-based Input Method (hereafter "Red
Dragonfly Input Method") is developed by a research group led
by Dr. K.K. Luke of the Department of Linguistics, University of
Hong Kong. The input method is based on the Linguistic Society of
Hong Kong's Cantonese Romanization Scheme and the University of
Hong Kong's Cantonese Corpus. It uses words and short phrases as
its fundamental input units so as to avoid the problem of homophones.
To illustrate, the word tin hei, which is formed by two characters,
can be input by typing ˇ§tinheiˇ¨ as one word, instead of typing first
ˇ§tinˇ¨ and then ˇ§heiˇ¨. It also draws on the research findings of
Dr. Cheung Kwan Hin of the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies,
Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The Cantonese pronunciations of
a set of commonly used characters in the Hong Kong SAR Government's
Supplementary Character Set (HKSCS) is incorporated in the data
file used by the input method so that users can input characters
from the HKSCS. The input method takes into account conventions
of language use in Hong Kong and arranges characters in order of
frequency of occurrence. It can also rearrange items based on actual
use and incorporate in its data file user-defined strings.
You are welcome to download
the input method and try it. Any comments and suggestions should
be sent to Dr. K.K. Luke,
Department of Linguistics, University of Hong Kong .
