Evaluation Report

24 participants returned their evaluation forms to the Secretariat.  This report will be based on the data collected from them.

  1. Ways through which participants found out about the Conference

The first question was used to find out how the participants came to know about the Conference. The results are presented in the following chart:

How did you hear about the Conference?

 

 Most people found out about the Conference through the e-mail list.  Many others knew about the Conference from people they know.

 

2.  Pre-Conference Service

The next two questions aimed at investigating how satisfied the participants were with the Conference website, i.e. the information that it provided and whether it was updated frequently enough, and with the Conference Secretariat, i.e. the how efficient they were in responding to participants’ questions via e-mail and the usefulness of the information that they provided.

 How satisfied were you with the Conference website and the Conference Secretariat?

 

All of the participants were either very satisfied, or satisfied, with both the Conference website and the Conference Secretariat. 

 

3.   Pre-Conference Activities

           The next few questions were used to find out whether the participants liked the pre-Conference hike and the Wine Party.

            How would you rate the pre-Conference hike and the Wine Party?

           

All but one participant who answered this question rated the pre-Conference hike and the Wine Party above average.  Some people did not give a response to this question probably because they did not attend the relevant pre-Conference activity.

 When asked to comment on these two activities, these are some of the responses:

a) Pre-Conference Hike

" It would have been nice to go somewhere a bit more out of the way - some place one can't necessarily get to alone.

 " It was fun despite bad weather.

" It was very hot, but everyone had a great time and enjoyed the wonderful views. "

 b) Wine Party

 "Registration was very efficient."

 

4. Conference Features

In general, the participants were satisfied with the choice of the Conference venue, the facilities there, the catering arrangements, the Conference package, the Registration and Reception Desk, the accommodation arrangements, the publicity, and the Conference venue arrangements.  All of them got very good ratings as shown on the chart.  However, compared to other features of the Conference, the book display did not get a very good rating.  Many participants seemed to be dissatisfied with the book display organized by one of the sponsors, the Cambridge University Press (CUP).  The following quotes are comments on the book display by the participants:

"It would have been better to have more advanced books on display."

"More publishers would have been nice, but not realistic."

 "Could have been more prominent. CSLI should have participated (their head is very busy right now and must have forgotten."

"It could have been more specific to LFG and to the hosting university, city and part of the world."

"CUP only displayed their standard textbooks."

 Some participants also gave comments on other features of the Conference.  They are:

 a) Choice of Conference Venue

 "Conference and dorms were very accessible"

b) Facilities

 "Very helpful people for technical support."

 c) Catering

 "Water could have been provided during and outside Coffee Breaks."

"Chinese food for lunch would have been nice in my opinion, but I think many enjoyed having "Western" lunches."

 "Too much food."

d) Conference Package

 "Nice bags"

 "Very well organized"

"This was superb - the best ever."

"No other Conference will ever equal this high standard."

"A list of the participants, their affiliation and their e-mail addresses would have been useful."

e) Registration and Reception Desk

NIL

f) Accommodation

 "Very convenient location & good amenities for socializing and e-mail."

g) Publicity

"A few directional posters a little further afield - say, as far as West Gate - would have been helpful."

 "The poster should have had the schedule, or at least the titles of the talks.

h) Conference Venue Arrangements

"Superb organization"

 

5.  Overall Comments

 Which part/feature of the Conference you enjoy/like the most?

 

As can be seen from the chart, most participants enjoyed the Conference as a whole.  Some of their comments included:

 "Whole organization, quality of the papers"

"Talks and Workshops"

  "The content of the Conference; very high qualified scholars, papers and presentations."

 "Providing food for participants and defraying other expenses was very thoughtful and appreciated."

"The Program"

"General atmosphere - serious academics in very friendly environment."

Overall, 92% of the participants found the Conference excellent, while the other 8% found it very good.  Many participants gave very positive and encouraging comments about the Conference:

 "Let's have it in Hong Kong again!"

 "HKU has set a new standard for LFG Conference."

"Adams and his team deserve kudos for an exceptionally pleasant and well-organized Conference."
