It is argued that language and language use are complex dynamic systems. Many aspects of language use and language development can be clarified using ideas from Complex Dynamic Systems Theory (CDST). It can serve as a mid-level theory that governs more detailed theories. It is argued that theory building and implementation is also a sociological process in which a range of factors play a role.

Kees de Bot is Professor of Applied Linguistics at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Groningen. His research interests are multilingualism and second language development, on which he has published more than 100 scientific articles.
