Project Abstract

In one document outlining HKU’s approach to the introduction of IT in its curricula, it is said  "[T]he most important principle governing efforts to incorporate IT at HKU will be that learning and teaching with appropriate pedagogy are primary. IT is a means of supporting them--not an objective itself." The Department of Linguistics, dealing with a large number of students, shares this vision, and the present teaching grant proposal is one of the main ways two staff members of the department (in collaboration with an external partner) intend to translate this vision into reality. The project involves the computerization of course materials in three important subject areas of linguistics: conversation analysis, syntax, and language and literacy studies. Teaching and tutorial materials will be made available on-line by the use of web tutoring software, such as Web CT . Exercises and self-tutoring tests will be developed to complement the lecture notes, allowing for an increase in teacher - student and student - student interactivity. The distributivity and asynchronous availability of teaching materials by the use of IT will enable students to successfully and meaningfully integrate Information Communications Technology in their linguistic studies. In this way, the project will be helping to produce computer literate graduates for Hong Kong’s workforce in the 21st Century.
