Course Description

Writing is probably the most significant and fundamental cultural invention in the human world. It provides the means to record all aspects of spoken language in a permanent form, to convey information to others, to aid memory, to record historical events and to communicate to others across space and time. This course will investigate different features of writing, from its development, aspects of its classification, and its role in civilization and society. Students will be introduced to familiar and unfamiliar writing systems from around the world and will be able to understand and objectively assess different writing types during the course.
